Der Name des Ortes Beendorf soll angeblich von einem Mann namens Banno herrühren. Dies wird jedenfalls aus der ersten urkundlichen Erwähnung des Ortes als "Banenthorpe" abgeleitet, welche auf das Jahr 1150 datiert ist. Wer der Namensgeber Banno oder Benno wirklich war, ist unbekannt. Was sich damals zu beiden Seiten des Lappwaldes zutrug, weiß man ebenfalls nur in Bruchstücken. Der Roman verknüpft Bekanntes aus der Zeit vor 1100 mit Fiktivem. Die spannende Handlung ist in die Geschehnisse im damaligen Herzogtum Sachsen und im Römisch-Deutschen Reich eingebettet. Wichtige historische Persönlichkeiten der damaligen Zeit, wie Lothar III. von Süpplingenburg, die Grafen von Walbeck, Gertrud von Haldensleben und König Heinrich der IV. spielen eine Rolle und beeinflussen den Lebenslauf des Urvaters von Beendorf.
