Bishops played a central role in the relations between Jews and their Christian environment ever since the beginnings of Jewish existence in medieval Latin Europe. To different degrees and with varying emphases over time, they embodied the church's principles of both tolerating and limiting Jewish life. As territorial rulers they protected, taxed, but also oppressed and eventually expelled Jews. This collection combines detailed case studies on the bishoprics of medieval Germany, Sicily, Spain, France, England, and Silesia. Seit den Anfangen judischer Existenz im lateinisch-christlichen Europa spielten Bischofe eine zentrale Rolle in den Beziehungen der Juden zu ihrer christlichen Umwelt. In unterschiedlichem Masse und mit zeitlich variierenden Akzenten vertraten sie die kirchlichen Prinzipien der Duldung und der Eingrenzung judischen Lebens. Als weltliche Herrscher schutzten und besteuerten sie Juden, konnten sie aber auch unterdrucken und schliesslich vertreiben.
