P.I. Buck McDivit receives a mysterious object from the dying driver he pulls from a burning pickup truck. He soon learns the black pottery cup is at least a thousand years old, and was created by an artisan of an eastern Oklahoma tribe that no longer exists. He seeks to visit the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Park in eastern Oklahoma for answers. His employer, Clayton O'Meara has other ideas. He must also join an expedition in the mountains of eastern Oklahoma that is looking for evidence of Bigfoot. In Spiro Buck meets Thorn Little Deer, an archaeologist and curator of the Mounds Museum. He soon learns the Black Cup of Oklahoma is the most sacred object of the Mississippian Tribe, and worth a king's ransom to collectors of such artifacts. When he travels back in time to visit the Mississippians during a summer solstice celebration, he views their magnificent city and splendid pyramids. He has hallucinations when he shares tea from the Black Cup with Running Wolf, the chief of the Mississippians, and his beautiful spiritual adviser Esme. Can Buck manage to keep the Black Cup out of the hands of an ex-Army sniper without getting killed and scalped? Will he discover the secret of the Bigfoot long hidden in the mountainous wilderness of eastern Oklahoma? Does he live to discover a dark secret hidden in a remote and secluded box canyon?
