Donald John settles in Australia and meets the Harrises, a family of Scottish descent, who encourage him to expound Scotland's history and help them understand their roots. Revisiting Scotland with them gives opportunities for more history lessons as they explore Scotland's cultural background. He notes an exciting political awakening in his family, but it is not for him to become involved. Young Matt Harris has a stronger image of Scotland's future and becomes caught up in the campaign for independence. He follows the political manoeuvres to the point of obsession and gets involved in endless debates and discussions. After the referendum, Donald John puts aside thoughts of independence and Matt intends to put politics behind him until, for Scotland, political fact becomes stranger than fiction.
