Libro que inicia por segunda vez con paso fuerte la literatura de un pueblo, los cantares gallegos arrancan de la imitación y de la glosa, entroncando con los viejos poemas de lírica galaico-portuguesa medieval, para cumplir un objetivo concreto: cantar a Galicia, sus paisajes y tierras, sus rías y romerías, sus foliadas y costumbres, sus antiguas tradiciones y sus mitos campesinos. De ahí que la obra sea un canto colectivo, basado en las figuras “épicas” de la vida gallega: el gaitero, los mozos y sus danzas, sus rías, sus vírgenes religiosas, las rapazas campesinas, las romerías, las laradas y hogares, además de esa recurrencia a temas de canciones tradicionales, versificados en ritmos a veces propios, como el de la muiñeira. El presente volumen es edición íntegra y bilingüe de la obra rosaliana.
