Desde 1948 ha trabajado como novelista, guionista, dramaturgo, ensayista, director de cine y teatro, actor, editor de cine, escritor de historietas, músico, compositor, filósofo, titiritero, mimo, psicólogo, dibujante, pintor, escultor y autor de cómics. Ha publicado 41 libros originales entre 1963 y 2022. Es autor de más de doscientos cómics entre 1965 y 2022. Ha dirigido diez films entre 1957 y 2022.

Es mayormente conocido por su prolífico aporte al cine de vanguardia, especialmente por El topo (1970) y La montaña sagrada (1973).
