Maria Szymanowska (1789-1831) war eine aussergewohnliche Musikerin. Aus judisch-frankistischer Familie stammend heiratete sie zunachst einen Gutsbesitzer, doch als sie mit etwa dreissig Jahren erste Erfolge als Komponistin und Pianistin feierte, erfand sie sich neu: Nach der Trennung von ihrem Mann wurde sie zu einer der ersten reisenden Pianistinnen Europas und zog viele Jahre durch den gesamten Kontinent, ehe sie sich in St. Petersburg niederliess. Danuta Gwizdalanka zeichnet das Leben dieser besonderen Frau, die durch ihre Bekanntschaft mit Adam Mickiewicz und Johann Wolfgang von Goethe auch Eingang in die Literaturgeschichte gefunden hat, in schillernden Farben nach. Dabei deckt die Autorin auch einige Mythen auf, die sich im Laufe der Zeit um die Musikerin gerankt haben. Die Musikwissenschaftlerin Danuta Gwizdalanka hat zahlreiche Musikerbiografien verfasst. In der Reihe "Polnische Profile" sind bereits Bucher uber Karol Szymanowski (kein Verwandter von Maria!) und Mieczyslaw Weinberg erschienen.
