L'ocell petit, de color bru i plomatge que el fa semblar pelut —el kiwi— únicament es troba a Nova Zelanda, i n’és el símbol nacional. La semblança de la fruita amb l’ocell i la necessitat de trobar un nom associat a la nació van fer que l’any 1959 se la comencés a anomenar amb el nom amb què avui la coneixem. Aquesta fruita tan exòtica i sumptuosa va ser un producte estrella els anys seixanta: els horticultors van aconseguir conrear un kiwi més gran, menys àcid, menys pelut i més dolç, perfecte per a una infinitat de plats —amanides, plats amb carn, postres, còctels—, i amb un alt valor nutritiu.
