Nació en Connecticut y en 1951 se graduó en Yale. En París (1953-1954) conoció a Dominique Lapierre, con el que ha escrito cinco de sus grandes bestsellers. En 1956 se traslada a Roma en calidad de redactor jefe adjunto y en noviembre de ese mismo año es nombrado corresponsal en Beirut para el Próximo Oriente. En 1959 se hace cargo de la revista Newsweek en Beirut, lo que le dio la oportunidad de cubrir una época llena de agitación política y social en países como India, Pakistán, Etiopía, Egipto y Sudán. En 1961 Newsweek lo nombra jefe de su sede en París, lo que le permite entrar en contacto con los círculos de la violencia armada argelina. En 1962, Larry Collins y Dominique Lapierre deciden unir su experiencia como reporteros.
