Die Studie führt linguistische und sozialpsychologische Forschungsergebnisse zusammen und zeigt, daß die verbreitete These, Jugendsprache würde der Abgrenzung gegenüber Outsidern dienen, nur mit Einschränkung gilt, da Jugendsprache vielfältige Funktionen übernimmt. Zunächst werden die theoretischen Zusammenhänge der Funktionalität von Sprache in Dialogen Jugendlicher mit Erwachsenen aufgezeigt. Darüber hinaus wird in empirischen Analysen der Gebrauch von Jugendsprache durch Jugendliche im Gespräch mit Erwachsenen systematisiert. Die Analyse von Jugendsprache im Munde Erwachsener gibt schließlich Einblicke in die bislang nicht erfaßten Imitationsversuche von Outsidern.
