Midtpunktet i romanen er handelshuset Garman & Worse på Sandgaard, som er basert på Kielland-familiens eget handelshus, Jacob Kielland & S n. Rollefigurene er i stor grad basert på folk i hans egen familie og omgangskrets; både moren og faren, samt flere av hans forfedre, kan kjennes igjen i flere av karakterene i boken.
