Amundsen hadde lenge syslet med planer om å fly til Nordpolen før han 18. mai 1925 kunne lette med to båtfly fra Ny-Ålesund og sette kursen nordover. Åtte timer seinere landet de på 87 grader 43 minutter nord. Ett fly var ødelagt og ett fungerte men manglet rullebane. Etter 4 uker med slit klarte Roald Amundsen og hans fem menn å få ett av flyene på vingene igjen og vende tilbake til sivilisasjonen og livet.
