I have! At first, it was just a simple thought, but then over time, it gradually became a question. What did Jesus mean when he commanded all his followers to make disciples? Did that command include ordinary Christians, like you and me, or just the specially selected? Is everyone supposed to be making disciples or is that just for Ministers or Missionaries or those who have gone to Bible College?Where are the disciples? When I look at the various churches, I see plenty of preachers, lots of teachers, expensive Bible schools and colleges, but I don't hear anyone claiming to be a disciple of Christ. Where are those who are obeying Christ's command to make disciples in their daily lives? Where are the testimonies of what they have done? And where are those who are teaching ordinary people to go and make disciples? The Great Non-Commission!Go into the world and make disciples, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matt.28:19-20) Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and to teach them to obey all his commands. So, if this is a command, why are we not obeying it? Why don't Ministers in every church teach all Christians how to go and make disciples? When I cast my mind back over the years, I can remember many Christians being encouraged to go and get degrees or certificates in one thing or another, but I can't recall anyone being told to go and make disciples for Christ. I can't remember hearing any sermons on how ordinary people, those sitting in the pews, should obey Christ and make disciples as part of their normal Christian walk. It appears that, throughout the whole western world, the Great Commission of Christ has, through a total lack of interest, become the Great non-Commission. How did that happen? When I first started seriously thinking about Christ's command to make disciples, my mind flicked back to the time of Christ and to his twelve famous disciples.I wondered, "Is being a disciple still relevant? Is being a disciple different from being a Christian? How can I make disciples, if I am not a disciple myself?" How do I become a disciple? This is the question that opened all the doors for me. I learned that a disciple is a person who knows how to 'go, in Jesus Name'. What does that mean?Well, that's another thing that doesn't get taught in church! For most of my life I thought the words, 'in Jesus Name', were just tacked onto the end of a prayer; like a different way to say 'Amen'. They were the signal that your prayer had finished.I had no idea of the power contained within Christ's name, or how to use it.When I understood the reason Christ told us to 'go in his name', I understood what it meant to be his disciple. **************See more at: www.inhisname.com.au
