So when the math contest arrives Ian wants to win badly, but he has discovered Thomas' mother is sick and Ian feels badly for him. He realizes Thomas is a real person, not just a math genius. And there is always next year. When Ian breaks a neighbor's window with a fly ball and has to take responsibility for it, he realizes magic can't and shouldn't fix all his problems.
