Ikonizität in Gebärdensprachen wird bisher meist als sprachliches Randphänomen betrachtet. Anhand der Deutschen Gebärdensprache (DGS) wird untersucht, ob dies gerechtfertigt oder durch die Grenzen des lautsprachlichen Mediums bedingt ist. Grammatik und Syntax der DGS zeigen, dass der Ikonizität eine der Arbitrarität mindestens gleichwertige Rolle zukommt und sie somit auch in der linguistischen Theoriebildung stärker berücksichtigt werden muss.
