Der Leutnant Gustl bezieht sein Selbstbewusstsein gänzlich aus dem Tragen der Uniform. Nicht-Militärs verachtet er, ebenso Frauen und Juden und überhaupt alles, was er unter sich wähnt. Dementsprechend ist er doch sehr in seinem Ehrgefühl gekränkt, als ein unter ihm stehender Bäcker ihn als dummen Bub verunglimpft und ihn vorführt. Was tun? Bleibt eigentlich für einen gestandenen Leutnant nur Selbstmord, oder nicht? Das alles überlegt er sich im inneren Dialog und das ist überhaupt das prägende Element dieses Romans, der fast vollständig aus dem inneren Monolog besteht.
