The focus of the story is that of the life of the oldest girl in a large French-Canadian prairie family, Bernadette. Bernadette is always looking for an escape from the stilted life she experiences. We venture with her and feel what it is like to be a child of the prairies in the early part of the 20th century. Her journey is at times heartfelt, at other times painful, and at the end of a long road, we find that it has always been, human.
