Der durch die Reformation ausgeloste Glaubensstreit warf fur die seit jeher vorhandene Untrennbarkeit von Politik, Religion und Recht Probleme auf. Denn indem die Reformation bisher anerkannte theologische Autoritaten und Wahrheiten in Frage stellte, musste Herrschaft und politisches Handeln neu bzw. anders theologisch begrundet werden.Die Bundestage des Schmalkaldischen Bundes wurden darum zu einer uberaus bedeutsamen politischen Gesprachsplattform in einer Zeit politischer Neuorientierungen. Dies gilt zum einen in einer Aussenperspektive, in der die Bedeutung der Bundestage als Moglichkeit zur Initiierung bzw. Durchfuhrung von reichsweiten, teils gar europaischen Aushandlungsprozessen und strategischen Diskussionen einer Analyse bedarf. Zum anderen mussen in einer Innenperspektive die Bundestagungen als Orte strategischer Diskussionen zwischen den Bundesmitgliedern beleuchtet werden.
