लक्ष्मण रामायण के एक आदर्श पात्र हैं। इनको शेषनाग का अवतार माना जाता है। रामायण के अनुसार, राजा दशरथ के तीसरे पुत्र थे, उनकी माता सुमित्रा थीं। वे राम के भाई थे, इन दोनों भाइयों में अपार प्रेम था। उन्होंने राम-सीता के साथ 14 वर्षो का वनवास काटा। मंदिरों में अक्सर ही राम-सीता के साथ उनकी भी पूजा होती है। उनके अन्य भाई भरत और शत्रुघ्न थे। लक्ष्मण हर कला में निपुण थे, चाहे वो मल्लयुद्ध हो या धनुर्विद्या। लक्ष्मण एक आदर्श अनुज हैं। राम को पिता ने वनवास दिया, किंतु लक्ष्मण राम के साथ स्वेच्छा से वन गमन करते हैं - ज्येष्ठानुवृति, स्नेह तथा धर्मभाव के कारण। वास्तव में लक्ष्मण का वनवास राम के वनवास से भी अधिक महान है। डॉ- विनय ने उपन्यासिक शैली में लक्ष्मण का अद्भुत वर्णन किया है।
