Greenhouse gases emit and absorb radiant energy, in the thermal infrared zone. Gases like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, methane, hydrofluorocarbons, ozone and water vapor are the prominent types of greenhouse gases which result in an increase in temperature of the Earth's surface. This effect is called the greenhouse effect. Some gases have an indirect radiative effect. Elevated levels of greenhouse gases can potentially lead to rising sea levels, extreme weather phenomena, negative effects on agricultural productivity and loss of biodiversity.
