Aquest relat est� inspirat en la veritable història i valenta feina que van fer les Bibliotec�ries a Cavall, a les quals es coneixia com «les senyores dels llibres» en la serralada dels Apalatxes a Kentucky, als Estats Units. El projecte de les Biblioteques a Cavall va ser fundat durant els anys trenta del segle XX, i tenia per objectiu portar llibres a les regions més remotes a on amb prou feines hi havia escoles i cap biblioteca. Dalt de tot de les muntanyes, els camins gairebé eren inexistents i s?hi havia de pujar pels llits dels rierols o per senderes escarpades. Les senyores dels llibres havien de viatjar a cavall o amb mula pels mateixos camins tortuosos cada quinze dies, carregades de llibres, tant si feia bon temps com si feia mal temps.
