Bautzen II ist die einzige Strafvollzugseinrichtung der DDR, die inoffiziell dem Ministerium fur Staatssicherheit untersteht. Nach auaen als normale Strafvollzugseinrichtung getarnt, erhalt das Gefangnis 1956 eine Sonder-stellung. Hier sperrt die Staatssicherheit besonders gefahrliche "Staats-feinde" ein. Bautzen II dient der Inhaftierung von Oppositionellen, Spionen, Republikfluchtlingen und deren Fluchthelfern aus dem Westen sowie von Abtrunnigen innerhalb des Staats- und Militarapparates der DDR. Mit dem Zusammenbruch der SED-Diktatur 1989 endet auch die Geschichte des Stasi-Gefangnisses Bautzen II.
