Synopsis "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The original 1900 edition (unabridged) (in English)"

The Wonderful Wizard of OzThe Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the classic American children's novel about the adventures of Dorothy, a young girl who along with her dog Toto is swept away by a cyclone to the magical Land of Oz. It was written by L. Frank Baum and published in May 1900. Dorothy lives with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and Toto on a farm in the Kansas prairie. One day, Dorothy and Toto are caught up in a cyclone that deposits her farmhouse into Munchkin Country in the magical Land of Oz. The falling house has killed the Wicked Witch of the East, the evil ruler of the Munchkins. The Good Witch of the North arrives with three grateful Munchkins and gives Dorothy the magical Silver Shoes that once belonged to the Wicked Witch. The Good Witch tells Dorothy that the only way she can return home is to go to the Emerald City and ask the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to help her. The Library of Congress has declared it "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairy-tale." Its groundbreaking success and the success of the Broadway musical adaptation led Baum to write thirteen additional Oz books which serve as sequels to the first story. The 1939 film musical adaptation starring Judy Garland is considered by many to be one of the greatest films in cinema history.about the author: Lyman Frank Baum was an American author chiefly famous for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels, 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and the nascent medium of film the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book would become a landmark of 20th-century cinema. His works anticipated such century-later commonplaces as television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk and action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing (Aunt Jane's Nieces at Work).Baum made use of several pseudonyms for some of his other non-Oz books. They include: Edith Van Dyne (the Aunt Jane's Nieces series)Laura Bancroft (The Twinkle Tales, Policeman Bluejay)Floyd Akers (The Boy Fortune Hunters series, continuing the Sam Steele series)Suzanne Metcalf (Annabel)Schuyler Staunton (The Fate of a Crown, Daughters of Destiny)John Estes Cooke (Tamawaca Folks)Capt.
