Synopsis "Time & Remains of Palestine (in English)"

With a curiosity for history and topography James Morris began photographing the remains in Israel of the former British Mandate of Palestine, promised as a homeland to such different peoples. Once attuned, traces started to unfold. However, little explanation of their history was apparent in the many memorials and plaques found throughout the land that honour biblical, crusader and modern Israeli history. That history appeared obscured. In parallel he made a series of journeys in and around the labyrinthine West Bank, reflecting on the concept of a would be future Palestine that had resulted from the Oslo peace accords, but had failed to materialise in any meaningful form. The resulting works act as bookends of the period of time since the foundation of Israel, encapsulating something of the story of Palestine. Part I probes the now historic Palestinian presence in much of Israel, reflecting on the sense of Nakba (catastrophe); documenting the remains of some of the 400 or so villages that were depopulated and demolished as a consequence of the 1948 war; recording the occasion and consequence of conquest. Part II documents the fabric of conflict in the contemporary West Bank, a land zoned into multiple and convoluted areas; divided by walls and fences; halted by checkpoints and road blocks; reduced by settlements. It witnesses parallel worlds of parted peoples, each with a narrative in variance to the other. Together they are as two small pieces in a complex puzzle, joined in the need to see more of the picture. In contemplating the enduring notion of Palestine the intent is not just to chronicle history and landscape; also to comprehend in part that which evolved and reverberates still.
