Milionari i excèntric, William Beckford (1759-1844) va ser un dels personatges més curiosos I interessants del món cultural de la seva época. En algunes de les biografíes de Beckford se lo apliquen els qualificatius de viatger, bibliòfil, pervertit i pederasta, entre d’altres, però tots els seus biògrafs coincideixen que va ser l’autor d’una de les novel·les més originals de la història de la literatura. Efectivament, Vathek, escrita i publicada inicialment en francés i lloada per jorge luis Borges, està considerada com la millor mostra de conte oriental de la literatura inglesa, i una de les primeres novel·les gòtiques.
