Der Band beschaftigt sich mit dem Denkmalwert und der gesellschaftlichen Akzeptanz von Bauzeugnissen aus der Zeit des Sozialismus in Mittel- und Osteuropa. Zu Wort kommen erfahrene Konservatoren und Planer sowie Kunsthistoriker und engagierte Kunstler aus postsozialistischen Landern, die das Architekturerbe des Sozialismus nicht als Burde, sondern als Chance zur (re-)interpretierenden Erhaltung und Erneuerung eines gemeinsamen europaischen Nachkriegserbes verstehen. Der Band versammelt die Ergebnisse einer gemeinsamen Konferenz des Deutschen Nationalkomitees von ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) und des Geisteswissenschaftlichen Zentrums Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas an der Universitat Leipzig (GWZO). Er wendet sich an Stadtplaner und Architekten, Konservatoren und Restauratoren, Historiker und Kunstwissenschaftler, Kulturschaffende und Denkmalpolitiker.
