Wolfgang Musculus (1497-1563) war geprägt vom elsässischen Humanismus und vom benediktinischen Mönchtum, von Martin Luther und von der Strassburger Reformation. 1531 wurde er nach Augsburg berufen, wo er in entscheidender Weise für die Durchführung der Reformation verantwortlich zeichnete. Nachdem er im Gefolge des ""Interims"" die Stadt verlassen hatte, fand er 1549 in Bern als Professor der Theologie einen Ort kontinuierlicher kirchlicher, exegetischer und systematisch-theologischer Betätigung. Noch Pierre Bayle bezeichnete Musculus als ""einen der berühmtesten Theologen des 16. Jahrhunderts"". Er gehört zu den bedeutendsten Gestalten der zweiten Reformatorengeneration.
