Originally, to protect the integrity of the Silent Service we were not allowed to tell anyone, not even our Mothers, where our Submarine, the USS Charr, was and what we were up to during our time 'over there'. During the Cold War, the armed forces established a PR or public relations system that required each commanding officer to keep the family's of the personnel under his command, informed of his/hers whereabouts and activities, without revealing anything that might benefit any potential adversary. The Navy issued "FamilyGrams"... hence the title. Prior to joining the Submarine Navy (ours) the author served as a tech and was also a popular shipboard Rock'n'Roll DJ aboard a Light Guided Missile Cruiser with the Skimmer Fleet. The timeline is the early 1960's and bears witness to the sunset of not only the Diesel Submarine Navy but to the WW II era Navy as well...on the cusp of Vietnam and pre drugs...
