Inspired by Byzantine mosaics, the painting is layered with gold and silver leaf, and embellished with a textured gesso relief of elaborate geometric patterns. Klimt’s work was crucial in the evolution of art from the nineteenth century to the twentieth, and his influence on illustration was momentous.
