Las fuentes mágicas son hijas de las novedades tecnológicas presentadas en las exposiciones universales de finales del siglo XIX para deleite de las masas. La técnica de iluminar el agua fue perfeccionándose y culminó en la puesta en escena efectuada en la Exposición de Barcelona de 1929. Su creador, el ingeniero autodenominado visionario, Carles Buïgas, eufórico por el éxito del dispositivo, empezó a planear nuevos proyectos espectaculares, llevando al límite las variaciones sobre el tema de las fuentes: mundos subterráneos - un túnel sobre el estrecho de Gibraltar-, islas flotantes sobre el Atlántico, una Nave luminosa que pasearía por el mundo cargada de fuentes a bordo, o hasta un Teatro integral de agua-luz-música pensado para Madrid o Barcelona.
