This collective work approaches contemporary suffering from a critical and philosophical perspective, contesting the exclusivity that psychologies and psychiatries now enjoy as the only legitimated disciplines to take charge of and understand what was once called the " sorrow of the soul". The diversity of perspectives gathered here seeks to validate philosophical thinking on the "pathological", questioning deep-rooted concepts, practices, partisan histories and exclusionary modes of approach that cut across the disciplines of the "experts of the soul". In addition to stressing the legitimacy and necessity of a critical approach to the issue of pathos, it was the editors' aim to try to form a community of researchers who would collectively address their concerns. The convening of voices that are dissimilar, even contradictory, is intended to promote a pluralistic communitarian reflection that is free of sectarianisms. Recognizing the complexity of psychic suffering, the text has an undeniable social and political vocation: it seeks to explore the landscape of suffering in order to give voice to the cultural and social wounds that in various ways hurt us, thus promoting dialogue (or conflict) with the hegemonic discourse, whether biomedical or psychological.
