antonio mª esquivel y suárez de urbina (sevilla,1806-1857) es uno de los pintores más genuinamente románticos españoles, tanto por su propia biografía como por los caracteres estilísticos de su obra, en la que destacan su pericia dibujística y su equilibrada cromática. trabajó toda clase de asuntos: religiosos, mitológicos, histórico y costumbristas, siendo además un excelente retratista. se mostró como un gran teórico de la anatomía artística, cuya docencia desempeñó en la academia de san fernando de madrid, confirmándolo su célebre tratado de dicha materia cuyo texto ilustró con hermosos grabados.
