Es wird von Bienen aus Knospen, Blättern und Rindenexsudaten verschiedener Pflanzen in gemä igten und tropischen Gebieten gesammelt. Propolis wird auch als "Bienenleim" bezeichnet, da es von Bienen zur Abdichtung und zum Schutz ihrer Bienenstöcke hergestellt wird. Es hat verschiedene biologische Eigenschaften wie entzündungshemmende, antimikrobielle, antimykotische, antioxidative, antitumorale, geschwürshemmende und Anti-HIV-Aktivitäten. Heutzutage wird Propolis auch in der Zahnmedizin als Naturheilmittel verwendet. Es wird in Mundspülungen, Zahnpasten zur Kariesvorbeugung, bei der intrakanalen Spülung, der direkten Überkappung der Pulpa und der Pulpotomie verwendet. Es ist im Handel in Form von Kapseln, Mundspüllösungen, Cremes, Halsbonbons, Pulver und auch in vielen gereinigten Produkten erhältlich, denen das Wachs entzogen wurde.
