Pedro José Fonte, último arzobispo español de México, nombrado en 1815, había sido testigo y en parte actor de todo el proceso de emancipación del virreinato desde los primeros episodios de 1808 y vivió como prelado la fase final de tal proceso que comienza en 1820, culminando en el Tratado de Córdoba (1821). Al haberse proclamado emperador Agustín de Iturbide, Fonte regresó a España en 1823 sin renunciar a su sede, lo que se le ha criticado. Junto a la notable biografía del personaje, se incluyen aquí sus interesantes y olvidadas memorias.
