aravilloso compendio gráfico de las flores cultivadas en el jardínalemán más importante de la época, el Hortus Eystettensis no tieneparangón en cuanto a la variedad y cantidad de sus grabados de flores. Construido en 1355, el castillo de Willibaldsburg fue reconstruidopor el príncipe-obispo Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1593/1595-1612)como un imponente palacio renacentista dotado de un espectacularjardín dividido en ocho zonas a diferentes niveles.

VonGemmingen contrató los servicios de Basilius Besler (1561-1629), unboticario de Núremberg, para plasmar el esplendor y diversidad de sujardín en un volumen compuesto por 367 grabados. Un trabajo exhaustivo que aun hoy está considerado uno de los grandes tesoros de laliteratura botánica. El Hortus Eystettensis de Besler, publicado en1613, está estructurado en torno a las cuatro estaciones.
