भगवान गणपति आदिदेव हैं। वे भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती के परम प्रिय पुत्र हैं। गणेश चतुर्थी भगवान गणपति के जन्म दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। यह दस दिवसीय त्योहार भाद्रपद की चतुर्थी से प्रारम्भ होकर शुक्ल पक्ष की अनंत चतुर्दशी को सम्पन्न होता है। मान्यता है कि इन दस दिनों में भगवान गणपति पृथ्वी पर आकर मनुष्यों को अपने वरदानों से कृतार्थ करते हैं।इस त्योहार के प्रथम दिन घरों, अस्थायी पूजा केंद्रों अथवा पंडालों में भगवान गणेश की मूर्तियों की स्थापना की जाती है। दस दिन तक विधि-विधान के साथ यह त्योहार मनाते हुए ग्यारहवें दिन इन प्रतिमाओं का जल में विसर्जन किया जाता है। इस अवसर पर जनसमूह 'गणपति बप्पा मोरया, अगले बरस तू जल्दी आ' और 'मोरया रे बप्पा मोरया' आदि नारे लगाते हैं। यह त्योहार लोगों में आपसी सद्भाव एवं भाईचारे की भावना का संचार करता है।
