लोकनायक जयप्रकाश नारायण की जीवनी एक ऐसे महान क्रांतिकारी एवं स्वतंत्रता सेनानी की जीवन गाथा है जिसने भारत को स्वतंत्र कराने के लिये न केवल महात्मा गाँधी और जवाहरलाल नेहरू जैसे कांग्रेसी नेताओं के साथ कार्य किया अपितु डाॅ. राममनोहर लोहिया सरीखे महान क्रांतिकारी एवं समाजवादी के साथ भी कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर चले। जे.पी. आरम्भ में माक्र्सवादी विचारधारा से प्रभावित थे किंतु जवाहरलाल नेहरू के कहने पर वे भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के साथ भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में शामिल हुए। भारत के विभाजन के विषय पर उनका कांग्रेस से वैचारिक मतभेद हो गया और उन्होंने कांग्रेस से अलग होकर अपना अलग दल बना लिया। कुछ समय पश्चात् उन्होंने सक्रिय राजनीति छोड़कर आचार्य विनोबा भावे के भूदान आंदोलन एवं सर्वोदय आंदोलन में भी सक्रिय भूमिका निभाई। पुस्तक में उनके जीवन का एक प्रेरक वर्णन है कि कैसे बिहार का एक सीधासादा बालक बड़ा होकर 'लोकनायक' अर्थात् भारतीय जनता का नायक कहलाया।
