Das Interesse an der Wiederverwendung verschiedener Obst- und Gemüseteile hat zugenommen, nicht nur, um die ökologische Nachhaltigkeit zu fördern, sondern auch wegen der anderen positiven Eigenschaften, die von der Wissenschaft anerkannt wurden. Der Gehalt an bioaktiven Stoffen in Papayasamen, die fast immer weggeworfen werden, führte zur Erforschung alternativer Verwendungsmöglichkeiten. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde der Gehalt an nicht nahrhaften Verbindungen in den Samen von Carica papaya L., d. h. an Gesamtphenolen und Flavonoiden, quantifiziert und ihre antioxidative Aktivität bewertet. Obwohl es Hinweise darauf gibt, dass Papayasamen als natürliche Antioxidantien in der Lebensmittel- und Pharmaindustrie verwendet werden können, sind weitere Untersuchungen erforderlich, um ihre Toxizität zu bewerten.
