Mexiko ist mit einer Anbaufläche von 120.000 Hektar der weltweit führende Produzent mexikanischer Zitronen, Michoacán verfügt über 75.000 Hektar, mit einer Produktion von 900.000 Tonnen und einem wirtschaftlichen Umsatz von 2.595 Milliarden Pesos (SIAP, 2021). Zitrusbäume werden im Allgemeinen von einer Vielzahl von Schädlingen und Krankheiten befallen, die ihre Vitalität beeinträchtigen, ihre Produktion und die Qualität der Früchte mindern und manchmal zum Verlust der Bäume führen (Gravena, 2005). Diese Organismen befallen verschiedene Teile des Baums, wobei die Asiatische Zitruspyllide, Schildläuse, Thripse und Spinnmilben die wichtigsten sind (Miranda et al., 2020). Derzeit ist die Asiatische Zitruspyllide Diaphorina citri (Kuwayama) 1908 (Hemiptera: Liviidae) der wichtigste Schädling, der Zitrusfrüchte in Mexiko befällt. Das Insekt ist in ganz Mexiko verbreitet (López-Arroyo et al., 2008) und seine Bedeutung liegt in der Tatsache, dass es der Überträger von Huanglongbing (HLB) ist, der verheerendsten Zitruskrankheit, die alle Zitrusarten und -sorten befällt (Bove, 2006; Bassanezi, 2012; Stansly, 2012).
