Dos escribientes parisinos, François Denys Bartholomé Bouvard y Justine Romain Cyrille Pécuchet, se conocen un día de verano de 1838 y, casi al instante, se convierten en grandes amigos. Cuando Bouvard hereda una considerable fortuna ambos deciden instalarse en una granja de Normandía.
