"Hades, dios del Inframundo, secuestró a Perséfone y la llevó a su reino para ser su esposa.
La madre de Perséfone, Deméter, diosa de la agricultura, estaba tan angustiada por el secuestro de su hija que se negó a dejar crecer algo. Las plantas morían y los campos eran fríos y estériles.
Perséfone es miserable en la oscuridad y la inanimidad del Inframundo. Muy pocas cosas crecen allí, como cipreses y granada
Zeus apela a Demeter para permitir que las plantas vuelvan a crecer para evitar grandes pérdidas de vidas. Ella denuncia a Zeus por su parte en el secuestro de su hija, y exige que Persephone sea devuelto a ella.
Zeus está de acuerdo en que Perséfone puede regresar a su madre, pero debido a que había comido comida del Inframundo, Perséfone debe pasar la mitad del año con Hades."
