En el siglo XIX nadie sospechaba que reptiles gigantes poblaron la Tierra durante millones de años, antes de que aparecieran los primeros homínidos. Por eso, cuando comenzaron a descubrir huesos enormes y dientes de tamaño terrorífico, los sabios hicieron todo por acomodar los nuevos datos a sus antiguas concepciones. Los chinos pensaron que eran dragones, los ingleses que eran los monstruos míticos de la Biblia. Poco a poco las evidencias se impusieron: en la Tierra existió una "era de reptiles" a los que se le dio el nombre de "dinosaurios". "Todo comienza en el siglo XIX, cuando unos científicos ingleses se interesan en un diente de tamaño poco común." In the 19th century, no one suspected that giant reptiles lived on earth for millions of years before the first hominids appeared. So when enormous bones and teeth started to be discovered, wise people did everything to fit the new data into their old conceptions. The Chinese thought they were dragons; the English thought they were mythical Biblical creatures. Little by little, the evidence caught on: there was an era of reptiles, and those creatures came to be known as dinosaurs.
