In order to relate the portentous life of comedian John Belushi and the strident fanfare that surrounded his ascent and tragedy, Bob Woodward had to navigate a heterogeneous mass of materials such as diaries, letters, inventories, bills, and prescriptions, and carry out extensive interviews with a multitude of celebrities, ghosts, and nobodies: the deceased’s widow, colleagues such as Dan Aykroyd, actors and directors such as Chevy Chase, Robin Williams, Carrie Fisher, Steven Spielberg, and Jack Nicholson, musicians, policemen, mobsters, drug dealers, and other interesting characters of the underworld. Woodward creates a meticulous, moving, and occasionally cruel portrait of a time period and of an individual who lived too much and lost everything at the hands of an insatiable desire.
