Synopsis "Cuanta Tierra Necesita un Hombre?"

A modern parable about human greed, this edition of the classic short story features illustrations that capture its dark and ironic tone as well as the provincial Russian landscape. Leo Tolstoy answers the question of the title by introducing Pakhóm, an avaricious peasant whose desire for land is never satisfied. When Pakhóm hears of a supposedly simple-minded family with a lot of property, he is excited to buy it from them at as low a price as possible. However, the family plays a trick on Pakhóm, causing his greed to get the better of him and disclosing the moral message of the tale. Una parábola modernísima sobre la avaricia humana, esta edición del cuento clásico tiene ilustraciones que capturan su tono oscuro e irónico así como el paisaje ruso provincial. Lev Tolstói contesta la pregunta del título presentando a Pajom, un campesino avaricioso cuyo deseo por la propiedad nunca está satisfecho. Cuando Pajom se entera de una familia supuestamente ingenua con mucha propiedad, está entusiasmado de comprarla de la familia al menor precio posible. Sin embargo, la familia engaña a Pajom, cuya avaricia lo supera, revelando el mensaje moral del cuento.

Lev Tolstói está considerado, junto con Dostoievski, el escritor ruso más importante de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Miembro de una familia de la antigua nobleza, su infancia y adolescencia transcurrieron entre Moscú, la gran hacienda familiar de Yásnaia Poliana y Kazán, en cuya universidad se matriculó en 1844. Participó en la guerrra del Cáucaso y fue oficial de artillería. Entre sus obras destacan Infancia, adolescencia y juventud, Los cosacos o Resurrección. Con Guerra y paz y Anna Karenina se ganó el respeto de sus contemporáneos y un lugar preeminente en la historia de la literatura universal.
