In my case, it was a polygamist cult—in another’s life, it might be something different—but when long-held core beliefs of any individual or group are challenged, we can all expect a few negative responses to come our way. There are those who might claim that what you have written or talked about is not true, and some who might say that your desire to think for yourself is arrogant or selfish and that God will punish you for taking charge of your own life. But the people who say these things don’t know how to respond any other way. Many of them have been raised (as I was) to deny their true feelings, to scorn those who choose to live differently, and to believe in (and fear) a vindictive, punishing God—and that is a very hard thing to let go of!
