Upon his return to Spain, Columbus handed over his diary to the monarchs.Ferdinand of Aragón, aware of the importance of the document, immediately ordered two scribes to make a copy. Upon the death of the Admiral, the "twohanded copy" passed to Columbus's son Diego, and twenty years later, made it to his half-brother, Hernando. A short time later, the royal copy disappeared forever. We know Columbus's captain's log by two versions: that of his son Hernando (who extracts himself from the biography he wrote of the Admiral) and that of Fray Bartolomé de las Casas. This book unites both versions, making note of the similarities and discrepancies.
