Aus einem literarischen Streit mit dem Dichter August Graf von Platen entwickelte sich eine persönliche Auseinandersetzung, in deren Folge Heine auch wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft angegriffen wurde. In Die Bäder von Lucca kritisierte Heine Platens Dichtung als steril und führte dies auf die Homosexualität des Grafen zurück, die er damit publik machte. Er bezeichnete ihn als warmen Freund und schrieb, der Graf sei mehr ein Mann von Stei als ein Mann von Kopf.
