Die Geschichte der St. Michaeliskirche in Hamburg ist wechselvoll. Bereits um 1606 entstand die erste kleine Michaeliskirche aus einer Kapelle auf dem Friedhof au erhalb der Stadtmauern. Ab dem Jahre 1647 begann man unweit der kleinen Kirche mit dem Bau der ersten gro en Michaeliskirche. Durch Erweiterung des Stadtgebietes befand sich die Kirche von nun an in der Neustadt. Die Fertigstellung erfolgte im Jahre 1661. Infolge eines Blitzschlages im Jahre 1750 wurde die alte Kirche vollständig zerstört und man begann noch im selben Jahr mit der Errichtung der zweiten gro en Michaeliskirche. Der Autor Johannes Geffcken war selbst in den Jahren von 1829 bis 1864 als Pastor in der St. Michaeliskirche in Hamburg tätig. Überarbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe aus dem Jahr 1862.
