Don Segundo Sombra apareció en 1926 -un año antes de la muerte de su autor, quien había nacido en 1886- e inmediatamente fue reconocido como una obra maestra. Hasta entonces el prestigio de Ricardo Guiraldes fundado en un libro de poemas (El cencerro de cristal 1915) precursores de los modos líricos que años después lograrían tanto favor, en relatos poemáticos y costumbristas: Cuentos de muerte y de sangre (1915), Raucho (1917), Rosaura (1922), Xaimaca, (1923), etc.- solo había trascendido minoritariamente; con Don Segundo Sombra llegó a los públicos más extensos. Su verdad humana, su autenticidad argentina, su belleza formal se impusieron plenamente.
