1938 erschienen, kurz nach dem Tod des Autors, erzählt das Buch die Geschichten eines Soldaten, dessen Land von einem Diktator beherrscht wird. Dass das Buch von den Nazis verboten wurde ist also offenkundig ein Qualitätssiegel. Die offensichtliche Kritik am Nationalsozialismus konnte natürlich nicht hingenommen werden - nicht in einem Land, in dem der promovierte Germanist Goebbels Bücher verbrennen lässt. Das Originalmanuskript der Novelle befindet sich im Archiv der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek. Gröls-Verlag (Edition Werke der Weltliteratur)
